A major security operation is underway in Imo State following the reported abduction of a 17-year-old student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West.
The victim, identified as Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma, was allegedly kidnapped, triggering swift action from the Imo State Police Command.
Police spokesperson DSP Okoye Henry confirmed that officers were immediately deployed to the scene, working alongside local vigilante groups to begin an intensive search and rescue operation.
The Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Owerri to take over the investigation and coordinate intelligence-led efforts to track down the suspects.
Authorities say the operation is focused on securing the victim’s safe release while also ensuring those responsible are swiftly apprehended.
Security presence has been significantly increased around the FUTO axis and neighbouring communities, with continuous patrols, surveillance, and visible policing already in place.
The police command reassured students, residents, and university authorities that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard lives and restore calm in the area.
