Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State says it has completed the screening of 44 aspirants ahead of its primary elections scheduled to begin this week for the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, conducted on Wednesday, marks another major step in the party’s preparations for the emergence of candidates across different elective positions in the state.
According to the timetable released by the party, House of Representatives primaries will hold on May 17, while Senate and House of Assembly primaries are scheduled for May 20 and May 22 respectively.
Speaking on the process, the Imo PDP Chairman, Austine Nwachukwu, said the party remained committed to conducting peaceful, credible and democratic primaries in line with both the Electoral Act and the PDP constitution.
“We are well on time, adhering to the electoral act and our own constitution. We are equally working hard on all other fronts,” Nwachukwu said.
He added that the PDP’s experience in managing electoral processes had helped the party maintain stability and order despite criticism from political opponents and doubters.
“The PDP is used to election and electoral processes. That’s why we are conducting our activities calmly and maturely. Today, the evidence is everywhere that we have forged ahead strongly despite naysaying here and there. We are on the right track,” he stated.
The party chairman also assured aspirants and members that the selection process would remain transparent and fair, insisting that only candidates with genuine grassroots support within the party would emerge as flagbearers.
The development comes as political parties across Imo State intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 elections, with both the PDP and APC already deep into their internal nomination processes.
The statement announcing the screening exercise was signed by Lancelot Obiaku, the State Publicity Secretary of the party.
