Chelsea FC have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four-year contract beginning in July.
The announcement comes just one day after Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, capping another unstable season at Stamford Bridge marked by managerial changes and inconsistent performances.
Alonso, 44, became available earlier this year after leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent, despite having signed a three-year deal less than a year earlier. Before that, he had earned widespread praise during a successful spell with Bayer Leverkusen, guiding the German side to their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024 alongside a German Cup triumph.
Chelsea’s hierarchy are hoping the former Liverpool and Spain midfielder can restore direction and stability after a chaotic campaign that saw both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior leave their positions during the season. Interim boss Calum McFarlane will remain in temporary charge for the club’s final two Premier League fixtures before Alonso officially takes over.
Speaking after the announcement, Alonso described Chelsea as one of the world’s biggest clubs and said he shares the ownership’s ambition to build a team capable of consistently challenging for trophies.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said. “We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
Alonso’s arrival represents a significant statement from Chelsea’s ownership after months of criticism surrounding the club’s direction under the BlueCo project. Sources close to negotiations suggest the Spaniard was convinced by the long-term vision presented to him and is eager to begin rebuilding the squad.
The former midfielder enjoyed a decorated playing career with Liverpool FC, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad. He also won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, earning a reputation as one of his generation’s most intelligent midfielders.
Chelsea’s dressing room, however, remains a major challenge. Questions have been raised about player commitment and squad unity after reports of frustration within the camp. Senior players including Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez have publicly hinted at concerns over the club’s direction during interviews this season.
With Chelsea currently sitting ninth in the Premier League table, Alonso could also face the prospect of beginning his reign without European football next season unless the club secures a late finish high enough for Conference League qualification.
Still, Chelsea believe Alonso’s tactical reputation, leadership qualities and winning mentality can help reconnect the club with the standards supporters expect after another disappointing campaign.
