Nollywood star Genevieve Nnaji is making a major return to the screen after an eight-year acting break, joining the cast of the upcoming BBC drama series “Wahala.”
The celebrated actress and filmmaker, whose last on-screen appearance was in the 2018 hit “Lionheart,” is set to feature in the six-part thriller produced by Firebird Pictures, a division of BBC Studios.
The series is based on the acclaimed novel “Wahala” by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko and will stream on BBC iPlayer while also airing on BBC One.
BBC officially confirmed the cast this week, revealing that Nnaji will star alongside notable actors including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo and Susan Wokoma.
The drama follows the lives of four Nigerian-British women navigating relationships, careers and personal struggles in London, while confronting buried secrets and unresolved tensions connected to their childhood experiences.
Adapted from Nikki May’s bestselling debut novel, the story blends suspense, friendship and emotional conflict as hidden truths begin to threaten the bond between the women.
Central characters Simi, Boo and Ronke are played by Adedayo, Jumbo and Wokoma respectively, while Ayorinde takes on the role of Isobel, whose arrival disrupts the group’s close friendship.
Speaking about the project, Genevieve Nnaji expressed excitement about returning to acting and collaborating with the production team.
“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story, and I’m excited to be a part of it,” she said.
The project marks Nnaji’s first acting role since “Lionheart,” the Netflix-acquired film that also served as her directorial debut and earned international recognition for Nollywood.
In 2023, she quietly returned to filmmaking behind the scenes as executive producer of the feature film “I Do Not Come To You By Chance,” signalling her gradual re-entry into the industry.
BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt praised the quality of the scripts, describing the adaptation as gripping and filled with rich, layered characters that successfully bring Nikki May’s novel to life.
Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Executive Producer at Firebird Pictures, also described the production as an ambitious and entertaining story, adding that the cast assembled for the project reflects the scale of the series.
The announcement has already generated excitement among Nollywood fans eager to see Genevieve Nnaji back on screen after years away from acting.
