The Imo State Police Command has stepped up security operations in Ihiagwa and neighbouring communities in Owerri West Local Government Area following a failed kidnapping attempt along the Umuokwo Ihiagwa–Eziobodo Road.

The incident, which occurred during a coordinated attack by armed assailants, reportedly targeted a victim who was nearly abducted before a swift resistance disrupted the operation.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the attackers were forced to retreat after the prompt intervention of police operatives, local vigilante groups, and residents who mobilised quickly to confront the situation.

During the confrontation, the victim sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately rushed to a medical facility, where treatment is currently ongoing.

In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, ordered the deployment of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), alongside other tactical and intelligence teams, to reinforce security across the affected corridor.

CP Bosso reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that intelligence-led operations are already underway to identify and apprehend those behind the attempted abduction.

He also stated that additional proactive security measures have been activated to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the area.

Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, while also cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements or activities through designated emergency channels or the nearest police formation.

The Imo State Police Command reiterated its resolve to sustain proactive policing strategies across the state, stressing that maintaining public safety remains its top priority.
