Atlético Madrid are back among Europe’s elite after a dramatic aggregate victory over Barcelona secured their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2017.

Diego Simeone’s side advanced 3-2 on aggregate despite suffering a 2-1 defeat at the Metropolitano in the second leg, where Barcelona responded through goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres. However, Atlético’s earlier advantage and a decisive strike from Ademola Lookman proved enough to send the Rojiblancos through.

The result carries added significance as it marks the third time Atlético have eliminated Barcelona at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League, having previously done so in 2014 and 2016. It also ends Barcelona’s hopes of a deep European run in a tie defined by intensity and fine margins.

For Simeone, who has now spent 14 years at the helm of Atlético, the achievement was deeply emotional. The Argentine coach reflected on the club’s evolution and resilience across multiple generations of players, insisting their competitive identity remains intact.

“Knocking Barca out in the Champions League quarterfinals isn’t easy. We’ve faced Messi’s Barca, Yamal’s Barca, and we’ve done it. It’s been 14 years. Seeing the team compete still makes me emotional,” Simeone said. “The players have changed, we’ve started again so many times, and once again we’re among the four best teams in Europe.”

He added that Atlético’s mentality has gradually evolved, with the team now showing a more proactive attacking approach while maintaining their trademark discipline and organisation in big European fixtures.

Special praise was reserved for Antoine Griezmann, who is expected to depart for MLS side Orlando City at the end of the season. Simeone described the French forward as a defining figure in the club’s modern era.

“He’s a genius. We’ll realise over time that we’ve had a football genius here, a player who makes the difference, with experience and personality,” Simeone said. “Let’s hope destiny gives him what he’s looking for in his time left with us.”

Despite the defeat, Griezmann also acknowledged Atlético’s shortcomings on the night, pointing to costly errors that allowed Barcelona to control periods of the match.

“I’m very happy. We made two mistakes which you pay for straight away in these games. I gave away the ball for the second,” Griezmann said. “But with the fans and our quality, we got the goal. We weren’t comfortable with the ball, but we’re in the semi-finals. It doesn’t matter who we play.”

Atlético will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they will aim to continue their pursuit of a long-awaited European crown under Simeone’s enduring leadership.
