Afrobeats star Omah Lay has sparked widespread debate after boldly declaring himself the greatest artist in the genre over the past decade, insisting his strength lies in musical artistry rather than popularity metrics.

The Nigerian singer made the statement during a recent interview with Capital XTRA, where he doubled down on his belief that his creative output places him above his peers in the Afrobeats space.

“I am the greatest Afrobeats artist of the decade, I am the greatest,” he said. “You can say numbers, personality, and the level of fame, you would not consider me. But when it comes to the art itself, I am the greatest.”

The comments come just weeks after he made similar claims on the Nandoleaks podcast, where he expressed discomfort with being placed in the same category as other artists.

On that appearance, he insisted: “No, don’t do that. I’m the greatest,” adding that his focus has always been on the craft of making music rather than commercial metrics.

He also referenced fellow Nigerian superstar Burna Boy as the only artist he sometimes compares himself with, highlighting a rare sense of artistic peer grouping.

Omah Lay, who recently released his sophomore album Clarity of Mind, has also used recent interviews to criticise what he describes as a decline in creative depth within Afrobeats, arguing that the genre is losing its artistic edge.

The singer claimed the current direction of Afrobeats risks weakening the genre’s global reputation, urging artists to prioritise quality and intentional songwriting over trends.

Released on April 3, 2026, Clarity of Mind has already made a strong commercial impact, debuting at number one on Spotify’s Global Top Albums Debut chart.

In Nigeria, the project recorded over 16.7 million streams in its first week on Spotify and also topped Apple Music Nigeria’s album chart, reinforcing his presence in the industry despite the controversy surrounding his statements.
