A deadly confrontation in Taraba State has spiralled into a double tragedy, leaving a forest guard and a suspect dead in what authorities describe as a mix of violence and mob retaliation.
The incident, which occurred in Lau Local Government Area, is now under full investigation by the Taraba State Police Command following rising tensions in the affected communities.
Police Commissioner Moorkwap Sebastian Dongshal confirmed he visited Mararaban Kunini for an on-the-spot assessment after the situation escalated into what officials classified as culpable homicide and retaliatory killing.
Initial findings suggest the crisis began when a forest guard, Jerry Jimmy, attempted to arrest a suspect while on duty. A struggle reportedly broke out during the process.
According to police accounts, the suspect—identified as Ya’u Jaro Saidu from Jegem Village—allegedly stabbed the officer with a knife, inflicting injuries that proved fatal.
The situation quickly deteriorated as an angry mob descended on the suspect, killing him in what police described as an act of revenge.
In the aftermath, Commissioner Dongshal held meetings with leaders of both Fulani and Jenjo communities, urging restraint and warning against jungle justice.
Community representatives reportedly pledged to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The police command has now ordered a thorough investigation to identify everyone involved in both the killing of the forest guard and the subsequent mob attack, stressing that those responsible will be brought to justice.
