Tragedy has struck Nigerian football as former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo has died after reportedly collapsing during a local football match in Kaduna State.
The 40-year-old ex-international was said to be featuring at the Angwan Yelwa pitch in the Television area of Kaduna when he suddenly slumped on the field during play.
Reports indicate that Eneramo had come on as a second-half substitute before collapsing without any contact from other players, leaving teammates and spectators in shock.
A source quoted in local reports said he fell on the pitch and efforts to revive him on the spot were unsuccessful before he was rushed to hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Eneramo had retired from professional football but remained active in the sport, reportedly running a football academy aimed at nurturing young talent.
During his playing career, he featured for several clubs across Europe and Africa, including Beşiktaş J.K., Espérance Sportive de Tunis, and Nigeria’s Lobi Stars F.C..
His sudden death has triggered widespread mourning across the Nigerian football community, with tributes pouring in from fans, former teammates, and sports stakeholders.
The official Super Eagles social media account also paid tribute to the former striker, sharing his image with a simple message: “Rest in peace Michael.”
Eneramo was once regarded as one of Nigeria’s reliable attacking options during his international career, remembered for his strength and goal-scoring presence on the pitch.
