Osun State’s security funding drive received a major boost on Thursday after billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, father of Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke (Davido), donated N500 million to the state’s newly revived Security Trust Fund.
The announcement was made during the official launch of the fund in Osogbo, where Governor Ademola Adeleke also criticised the previous administration for neglecting the initiative, which he described as crucial to sustaining security operations in the state.
The donation was confirmed by the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, who disclosed that Adedeji Adeleke had personally reached out earlier in the day to pledge the financial support.
Governor Adeleke used the occasion to outline his administration’s renewed security strategy, including plans to deploy refurbished Armoured Personnel Carriers and new patrol vehicles to security agencies across the state.
He said the government is committed to maintaining Osun’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, despite the broader national security challenges.
“Our government decided to revive the initiative by updating the law and organising the launch today,” the governor said. “A security trust fund is a matter of necessity, considering the security climate in Nigeria and Osun State.”
He stressed that limited public funding makes public-private partnerships essential for effective security management, noting that the initiative is designed to bridge funding gaps in policing and surveillance infrastructure.
“This is not a political project or self-serving policy. It is a necessary step to secure our people,” he added, highlighting similar models operating in states such as Lagos and Kaduna.
Governor Adeleke also announced plans to establish a modern security situation room equipped with real-time CCTV surveillance to improve monitoring and response capabilities across the state.
Earlier, Igbalaye explained that the fund would support critical security infrastructure, including operational vehicles, communication equipment, surveillance systems, and logistics to enhance intelligence gathering.
He noted that although Osun State has enjoyed relative peace, sustained investment in security remains necessary due to rising insecurity in other parts of the country.
The N500 million donation from Adedeji Adeleke is expected to significantly strengthen the fund’s initial operations and support ongoing security reforms in the state.
