Nigerian music star Davido has openly distanced himself from politics, admitting that his earlier ambition to enter public office has faded after watching how other celebrities have struggled in the space.
Speaking during a livestream on Twitch, the singer said his perspective has changed over time, driven by both personal reflection and the track record of entertainers who made similar moves.
“Before, I wanted to go into politics,” he said. “But now I see it differently.”
Davido explained that his concerns are rooted in the risks involved—not just politically, but personally. According to him, years of building a strong brand, fan base, and reputation in the entertainment industry could be jeopardised by stepping into a field where public perception can quickly shift.
“All my years of goodwill, my name and my career… it is tricky because of how people look at things,” he said, pointing to the unpredictable nature of political engagement.
A major factor behind his hesitation is what he described as the underwhelming performance of celebrities who have ventured into politics.
“The superstars that have gone into politics, the transition hasn’t really been successful,” he added, suggesting that fame does not automatically translate into political credibility or effectiveness.
For Davido, the conclusion is becoming clearer.
“I feel like if you are a politician, you are a politician. It is like it is their business,” he said, drawing a line between entertainment influence and political expertise.
His comments reflect a broader reality in Nigeria and beyond—where public popularity may open doors, but sustaining political relevance requires a different kind of structure, discipline, and strategy.
Davido’s withdrawal from political ambition also signals something else: a recognition that influence doesn’t always need to come from elected office.
For now, his focus remains on music, culture, and the platform he has already built—without the risks that come with crossing into politics.
