Fresh violence has erupted in Kwara State after armed bandits launched a deadly overnight assault on a rural community, leaving scores of residents and security personnel feared dead.
The attack targeted Kemanji village in Kaiama Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday, with security sources confirming that the gunmen struck at about 3 a.m., catching residents off guard.
Troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by local vigilantes, reportedly engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted for nearly two hours. The confrontation, which stretched until around 5 a.m., resulted in casualties on both sides, including the reported loss of some soldiers.
While the exact number of victims remains unclear, multiple sources indicate that the death toll among villagers could be significant, raising renewed fears over escalating insecurity in the region.
The latest incident comes amid a string of recent attacks across Kaiama, where communities such as Woro and Nuku were previously overrun by bandits who killed residents, destroyed homes, and abducted dozens of people who are still believed to be in captivity.
In a separate but related development, suspected bandits also struck Ora Ayegbaju in Obbo-Ile, located within the Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, late Sunday night.
During that attack, three brothers—AbdulJareem Adamu, AbdulJareem Yunusa, and AbdulJareem Yusuf—were critically injured, while other residents fled the area to escape the violence. The victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Osi town.
The wave of attacks highlights growing concerns over the spread of armed banditry into new areas, with rural communities increasingly vulnerable to coordinated assaults.
