LAGOS — Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, a University of Lagos (UNILAG) graduate who earned a first-class degree in Cell Biology and Genetics with a CGPA of 4.82, has died months after celebrating her convocation.

On 15 January 2025, Anisa shared her academic achievement on social media, posting a screenshot of her results. She highlighted her condition as a sickle cell patient and expressed pride in her accomplishment:

“Can we skip to the good part?.. B.Sc. Cell Biology and Genetics (4.82/5.00). Who says having sickle cell disease is a barrier to academic excellence? Definitely not me! This is from the Grace of my Lord (27:40).”

Anisa was also the founder of a non-governmental organization supporting sickle cell patients. Her death was announced by @Saint_Kodes, who had been working on building a website for her NGO.

“I’ve been restless since I heard the news. Anisa is gone,” he said. “About renewing the hosting and domain, which was set to expire on the 5th of this month. I didn’t know that same day would be the day we’d lay her to rest.”

Anisa was widely recognized for her advocacy work and dedication to supporting those living with sickle cell disease. Her passing has prompted condolences and prayers from social media users, who praised her resilience and contributions.

“May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her Jannatul Firdaus,” wrote @thumininu1.
“May the smallest of her good deeds intercede for her, and may Allah shroud her in His Rahma,” added @aseeya23.
