Residents of Borgu Local Government Area in Niger State were thrown into tension after a group of youths allegedly tried to disarm soldiers who were enforcing a night curfew in the area.
The incident reportedly happened late on March 10 in New Bussa when troops of the 221 Battalion from the Wawa Cantonment were carrying out routine patrols following a curfew directive issued by the Borgu Local Government chairman.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post shared on X on Thursday, explaining that the situation escalated when soldiers intercepted several motorcycles near the Nigerian Correctional Service office in the community.
According to Makama, the patrol team encountered a group of aggressive youths who allegedly began pelting the soldiers with stones. The youths were also said to have attempted to overpower the troops in a struggle aimed at seizing a rifle while shouting abusive remarks.
Faced with the confrontation, the soldiers reportedly fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd. The youths subsequently fled the area before security reinforcements could arrive.
The Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service later reported the incident to the police, prompting the Divisional Police Officer in New Bussa to deploy additional personnel to restore calm in the community.
By the time the reinforcement team arrived, however, those involved had already scattered, leaving security operatives to maintain patrols across the area.
Community leaders, including the village head, were later summoned by security officials and advised to ensure residents maintain peace and avoid confrontations with security personnel enforcing the curfew.
Authorities confirmed that no arrests were made during the incident and no injuries were reported, while soldiers continued monitoring the area to prevent further disturbances.
