Nigerian singer Joeboy has weighed in on the controversy surrounding South African star Tyla’s victory at the Grammy Awards, insisting the singer rightfully earned the honour despite criticism from some fans.
Tyla clinched the Best African Music Performance award at the 2026 Grammys with her hit song “Push 2 Start,” beating a strong lineup of Nigerian nominees including Davido, Omah Lay, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy. Her victory sparked heated debate online, with some critics arguing that a Nigerian act should have taken the prize.
Speaking during a recent interview with Jay On-Air, Joeboy dismissed claims that Tyla’s win was undeserved, stressing that the South African singer had worked hard for the recognition.
According to him, although he personally hoped Davido would emerge victorious in the category, he believes Tyla’s success cannot be questioned.
“Personally, I was rooting for Davido to win the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammys, but you can’t take it away from Tyla. She is an amazing artist whether you accept it or not. She really put in the work,” Joeboy said.
The “Alcohol” crooner added that fans are free to express disappointment, but insisted the Grammy decision should not be used to undermine Tyla’s talent or achievements.
“People can be angry all they want but she deserved the Grammy win. I can’t fault her triumph,” he added.
Joeboy also revealed that Tyla is among the international artists he hopes to collaborate with in the future, praising her artistry and strong work ethic.
