The Nigerian Navy has destroyed an illegal crude oil storage facility containing about 17,500 litres of suspected stolen crude oil in the Bonny area of Rivers State.
The Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, said the operation was conducted on Friday under Operation Delta Sentinel, part of the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and illegal bunkering.
Folorunsho explained that the operation followed directives from the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, aimed at intensifying actions against crude oil theft across Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Personnel of the Forward Operating Base in Bonny discovered the illegal storage facility in the Opotumbi general area during routine surveillance operations. The Navy said advanced maritime surveillance technology helped identify dugout pits concealed under dense vegetation in the creeks.
According to Folorunsho, naval personnel moved quickly to the site and uncovered four dugout pits holding a total of 17,500 litres of suspected stolen crude oil. The products were destroyed in line with operational guidelines.
The Navy said the operation reflects renewed determination to tackle crude oil theft and other maritime crimes. Folorunsho added that the service will maintain regular patrols, strengthen surveillance, and enhance collaboration with other agencies to protect national assets and safeguard Nigeria’s economic interests in the maritime environment.
