Abuja, Nigeria – The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday presented cheques totaling more than N2.43 billion to 1,075 next of kin and families of police officers who died in active service across Nigeria.

The ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, addressed outstanding insurance benefits spanning more than seven years, under the Group Life Assurance and the IGP Family Welfare Schemes. The disbursement covers policy years from 2018 to 2026, including previously unsettled claims.

Speaking at the event, IGP Disu emphasised the importance of officer welfare, describing the presentation as more than financial assistance but a recognition of the courage, commitment, and ultimate sacrifices of the deceased officers.

“These officers were not only members of the Nigeria Police Force; they were fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who placed the safety of others above their own. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he said.

Disu also pledged to enhance administrative efficiency, deploy modern technology for record management, and eliminate delays in processing welfare benefits to ensure timely and transparent delivery.

ACP Ameh, Force Insurance Officer, echoed the IGP’s commitment to officer welfare, warning insurance firms against delays in settling claims, with the threat of blacklisting for non-compliance. She urged beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously, describing the initiative as part of broader efforts to strengthen the welfare framework of the Force.
