The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the evacuation of Nigerian nationals wishing to leave Iran as tensions in the Middle East intensify.
The evacuees are being escorted safely through the Armenian border, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). She shared the update on her X account, emphasizing that the exercise is coordinated by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran.
“Willing Nigerians are being escorted across the Armenian border by officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Iran to ensure safe passage,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “No Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war, as our officials are at the border to receive everyone who wants to leave.”
The evacuation comes amid heightened security concerns following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran. Retaliatory missile and drone attacks in parts of the Middle East have sparked fears of an escalating regional conflict.
NiDCOM officials and embassy staff are stationed at the border to facilitate the safe exit of Nigerians and provide necessary assistance throughout the evacuation.
The government assured that all citizens leaving Iran are being protected and that the exercise prioritizes their safety amid the ongoing tensions in the region.
