No fewer than 20 motorists have been convicted for multiple traffic violations following a special enforcement operation by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State.
The convictions were secured during the Phase II sitting of the FRSC Mobile Court held at the Itori Unit Command. The court session was presided over by Chief Magistrate O. T. Odunsaya.
Details of the operation were disclosed in a statement released on Friday by the Corps Public Relations Officer, Odunsi Afolabi. He explained that the motorists were prosecuted for a range of traffic violations, including excessive speeding, overloading and other safety-related infractions.
According to Afolabi, all the offenders brought before the court were found guilty, with none discharged during the proceedings.
“A total of 20 offenders were arraigned and subsequently convicted. Forty offences were recorded during the exercise, out of which 39 attracted various fines, while none of the offenders was sentenced to imprisonment,” he said.
The FRSC spokesperson explained that the enforcement drive focused on critical violations that pose significant risks on highways. These include failure to install speed limit devices, overloading, refusal to use seat belts, driver’s licence offences, tyre violations, irregular vehicle and number plate documentation, as well as poor vehicle maintenance.
Speaking during the session, the Sector Commander in the state, Akinwunmi Fasakin, said the mobile court exercise forms part of the corps’ ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with traffic regulations across major roads in the state.
Fasakin added that the initiative not only strengthens enforcement but also increases the operational visibility of the corps while discouraging reckless driving among motorists.
He commended the orderly conduct of the proceedings and acknowledged the presence of armed security personnel who ensured the exercise was carried out peacefully.
The sector commander also urged motorists to embrace responsible driving habits and ensure their vehicles carry proper documentation to reduce road crashes, injuries and fatalities.
He reiterated that the FRSC remains committed to prosecuting traffic offenders whose actions put other road users at risk.
