The Action Peoples Party (APP) has strengthened its position in the National Assembly following the defection of two sitting members of the House of Representatives.

Lawmakers Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and Mathew Nwaogu officially announced their exit from their former parties during plenary on Tuesday. Ugochinyere, formerly of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Nwaogu, previously of the Labour Party, cited ongoing internal crises as the reason for leaving.

“Lingering issues within our former parties have hampered effective participation and undermined our ability to represent our constituents,” the lawmakers stated in separate letters read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

In a move to consolidate its legislative influence, the APP appointed Ugochinyere as the party’s House Caucus Leader. The party’s National Chairman, Uche Nnadi, welcomed both lawmakers and described their defection as a step toward strengthening democracy and promoting effective governance.

“The APP is committed to offering a credible platform for lawmakers focused on people-oriented governance,” Nnadi said.

The addition of the two legislators is expected to enhance APP’s clout in the National Assembly, with party leadership signaling continued openness to welcoming like-minded leaders nationwide.
