Yeni Kuti, media personality and daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has warned contemporary artists against comparing themselves to the legendary musician. Speaking to Arise TV after receiving Fela’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys alongside other family members, she stressed that such comparisons undermine the enduring legacy of her father.
“Don’t compare chalk and cheese. Fela is a legend, give him his flowers. He has done his part,” Yeni said. She pointed out that Fela’s continued relevance nearly three decades after his death speaks volumes about his influence and impact on music globally.
Yeni advised rising artistes to measure themselves against their peers rather than legendary figures. “Compare yourself with your peers and leave our legends alone. We have legends, let’s respect them,” she added.
Her comments come amid ongoing debates sparked by Nigerian superstar Wizkid, who recently claimed he is “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticisms from Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, over comparisons between the Ojuelegba crooner and the Afrobeat icon.
Yeni’s remarks highlight the importance of respecting cultural icons and preserving their legacy, reminding the music industry that legends like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti continue to shape the foundation of Afrobeat music and inspire generations of artistes.
