The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to operators of trucks, tankers, and other heavy-duty vehicles to strictly observe traffic laws and speed limits following a serious road crash at Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi.

Mr Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, said the crash involved a speeding truck transporting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and a privately owned Toyota Corolla, underscoring the grave dangers posed by reckless driving.

“Preliminary security assessments indicate that the truck, bearing EKY 120 YK, violated established traffic safety standards and collided with a moving silver-coloured Toyota Corolla (EKY 289 HM),” Giwa said. “The force of the collision caused severe traffic disruption and posed an immediate threat to lives and property.”

In the aftermath, two pedestrians were struck, and the Toyota driver sustained serious injuries. Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing the victims and transporting them to a nearby hospital for intensive medical treatment.

To ensure a safe and effective emergency response, personnel from the Ajao Estate Police Division maintained order, while operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to manage the risk posed by the truck’s highly combustible cargo.

Giwa condemned the alarming rate of accidents caused by speeding, particularly among drivers of articulated vehicles, describing such behavior as “egregiously irresponsible” and a threat to Lagos State’s vision of a safe, orderly, and regulated transportation system.

“The Lagos State Government will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law on anyone found endangering lives through reckless or unlawful driving,” he warned.
