Weapons recovered as tactical teams storm hideouts in Amaocha Afara, Umunoha and Ifakala

Two suspected sub-commanders of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN), have been killed during a police-led clearance operation across forest enclaves in Mbaitoli and Njaba Local Government Areas of Imo State.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, citing security sources.

Gun Battle in Forest Hideouts

The operation, which reportedly took place late on February 24, was executed by tactical units of the Imo State Police Command following what authorities described as actionable intelligence.

According to the account, armed suspects opened fire upon sighting the operatives, triggering a gun battle. Two alleged sub-commanders — identified by the aliases “Minute,” said to be from Ebonyi State, and “Nwaotu,” reportedly from Mkpoku in Mbaitoli LGA — were killed during the exchange.

Arms and Communication Devices Recovered

Police operatives recovered two automatic pump-action guns, nine live cartridges, six expended cartridges and a walkie-talkie from the scene, the source said.

Other members of the group were reported to have fled the area with varying degrees of injuries.

Authorities confirmed that no police personnel were harmed during the operation, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.

Part of Wider Anti-IPOB/ESN Campaign

The clearance exercise is said to be part of sustained efforts by the Imo State Police Command to dismantle suspected IPOB/ESN networks operating within the state.

Attempts to obtain official confirmation from the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered at the time of filing this report.

Security operations targeting armed groups have intensified in parts of Imo State in recent months, particularly in forested areas believed to serve as operational bases.
