A senior government official in Imo State narrowly escaped a mob attack by angry members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mbaitoli LGA chapter, amid ongoing party ward congresses in the state.

The official, who hails from one of the Orlu Zone LGAs and is close to Governor Hope Uzodimma, was accused of attempting to interfere in the congress proceedings of other LGAs using his influence and connection to the governor. Reports indicate he allegedly tried to manipulate ward congresses, intimidate political leaders, and submit pre-determined names for ward executives.

During a visit to Mbaitoli LGA, the official reportedly met stiff resistance from party members. Sources said he was physically confronted and only escaped serious injury thanks to intervention from a few senior party leaders and bystanders. The true state of his health remains unknown.

The incident follows a directive by Governor Uzodimma during a Wednesday meeting at Government House, Owerri, asking LGA leaders to harmonise lists and present a unified slate. Observers say the official allegedly bypassed this process to pursue personal political interests.

The episode has sparked complaints from APC members across the state, highlighting concerns about undue influence, interference in local party affairs, and the manipulation of congress outcomes.
