Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move celebrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who took a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on X.

Fintiri Cites Developmental Agenda

In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri explained that his decision was driven by the developmental interests of Adamawa residents. He confirmed that several lawmakers, cabinet members, and PDP officials aligned with him, signaling a significant boost to APC’s presence in the state.

“Our aim is to accelerate development and ensure that Adamawa residents benefit from closer collaboration with the federal government,” Fintiri said.

Onanuga, commenting on the defection via X, stressed that politicians need strong home-state backing before pursuing national ambitions, subtly mocking the PDP’s inability to retain Fintiri.

Strategic Implications Ahead of 2027

Political analysts suggest Fintiri’s defection strengthens APC in a state long regarded as a PDP stronghold. The move could influence voter sentiment and reshape political dynamics in Adamawa ahead of the 2027 presidential election, consolidating the ruling party’s reach in the Northeast.
