Nollywood superstar Funke Akindele has made history with her latest film, ‘Behind the Scene’, which has become the first African movie to surpass N2 billion in box office revenue.
According to FilmOne, one of Nigeria’s leading film distributors, the movie grossed N2,103,039,706 within just one month of its release, setting a new benchmark for Nollywood and African cinema.
The milestone elevates Akindele to the status of Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker, making her the highest-grossing producer, writer, and director in West African cinema history. She has also claimed the distinction of being number one at the African box office for three consecutive years.
Celebrating the achievement, Akindele shared a heartfelt video on her Instagram page on Monday evening:
“We have every reason to thank God. 2 billion and counting is not a joke. Ladies and gentlemen, Behind the Scene to the world. Joy overflows, my heart is full of gratitude to God and my amazing fans. Reaching this incredible milestone would not have been possible without you. I’m deeply grateful.”
The film’s commercial triumph highlights the growing global influence of Nollywood, with Akindele cementing her reputation as a trailblazer in African entertainment.
