The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned residents of Ekiti State against attempting multiple voter registration, warning that anyone caught will face legal consequences.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Bunmi Omoseyindemi, issued the warning while announcing the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Ado Ekiti.
According to him, the commission will not hesitate to sanction offenders.
“Anybody who attempts to or is involved in multiple registration or commits other infractions in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise in the state would be dealt with according to the dictates of the law,” he said.
Second Phase Targets New and Missed Registrants
Omoseyindemi explained that the ongoing phase is intended for eligible citizens who missed the earlier exercise or need to update their voter details.
“This phase provides another opportunity for those who missed phase one to register or update their information,” he added.
He urged political stakeholders and community leaders to encourage first-time voters — particularly those who recently turned 18 — to take advantage of the opportunity ahead of the June 20 governorship election.
Timeline and Election Preparations
The first phase of the CVR ran from 25 August to 10 December 2025, followed by a public display of the voter register for corrections and objections between 15 and 21 December.
INEC has already released the provisional list of governorship candidates and set strict deadlines:
- January 12 – deadline for parties to withdraw or replace candidates
- January 19 – publication of the final list
The new Ekiti governor is expected to be sworn in on October 16.
Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to credible polls, Omoseyindemi urged politicians and voters to support efforts aimed at strengthening public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
