A viral video of US-based Nigerian dancer Korra Obidi twerking at the graveside of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has triggered debate online, prompting a response from Fela’s son, Seun Kuti.
Obidi, who is currently visiting Nigeria, had shared the video on Instagram, describing the dance as an “offering” to the late music icon. She said she chose to honour Fela in a way she believed matched his energetic personality and well-known admiration for expressive female dancers.
“We visited the grave site of Anikulapo Kuti today… one thing Fela loved was a woman with gyrating hips. So I decided to twerk for baba,” she wrote alongside the clip.
The footage quickly spread across social media, with users sharply divided. While some praised Obidi for celebrating Fela’s legacy in her signature style, others criticised the act as disrespectful.
Responding to the controversy, Seun Kuti appeared unfazed and even appreciative of the gesture. He suggested the performance aligned with his father’s vibrant spirit and playfully applauded Obidi for understanding what Fela enjoyed.
“You guys know what baba likes but you will never give him what he wants. E go better for you my sister,” Seun said.
The incident has continued to generate mixed reactions, reigniting conversations about the boundaries of tribute performances and the cultural legacy of Fela Kuti.
