Owerri is preparing for a lively December as organisers of the Owerri Fun League 2025 have released the full schedule for this year’s competition. The five-day event, which runs from 10–14 December, will feature an eclectic mix of entertainers, creatives, clergy and social groups competing in a six-aside football tournament at the 90 Degree Arena in New Owerri.
The tournament brings together an unusually diverse line-up, including Music Producers, Recording Artistes, Sports Journalists, MCs, Comedians, DJs, Reverend Fathers, Ngwori Sports Club, YBE, and the Hytel Team. The organisers say the aim is to foster unity among creatives while reviving community spirit in the Imo State capital.
Speaking on behalf of the Organising Committee, Hon. Chijioke Umelo said the tournament was designed to “restore vibrancy and fun to Owerri” after what he described as years of cultural quietness in the city.
“This league is more than a football competition; it is a gathering of the creative community, a celebration of friendship, and a platform to reconnect people across Owerri,” he said. “We welcome everyone — families, supporters, fun-seekers and lovers of sport — to join us as we bring excitement and energy back to the city.”

Organisers say the structure of the tournament — a straight knockout format — is intended to keep matches fast, competitive and entertaining. The participation of Reverend Fathers, alongside media personalities and entertainment figures, has already generated interest and humour across local social circles.
Hon. Umelo added that the league intends to grow into an annual celebration of creativity and sportsmanship.
“Owerri has always been a city of energy, talent and hospitality,” he said. “The Fun League is our way of giving people a reason to come together again, enjoy themselves and celebrate what makes this community unique.”
The Owerri Fun League 2025 is open to all spectators, and organisers say they expect a lively atmosphere throughout the four matchdays.
