Christmas will be marked with joy across northern Nigeria despite rising insecurity and deepening economic hardship, the Northern Christian Religious Leaders Assembly (NOCREAL) has assured. The group said Christians remain determined to celebrate the season while exercising caution where necessary.
Speaking in Kano, NOCREAL’s state leader, Reverend Murtala Mati Dangora, noted that Nigeria’s recent classification as a “Country of Particular Concern” would not overshadow the festivities. He stressed that Kano continues to enjoy peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims, even as pockets of instability persist.
Reverend Dangora acknowledged that several northern communities face increasing threats from banditry and terrorism, warning that celebrations in those areas may be held “with fear.” He identified Shanono, Tsanyawa, Bagwai and Rogo local government areas as places where churches are stepping up their security measures ahead of the holidays.
Beyond insecurity, he said the country’s harsh economic conditions are also reshaping Christmas preparations. While food prices have fallen slightly, he explained, many families remain cash-strapped and unable to celebrate in the way they are accustomed. Still, he emphasised that the spirit of the season remains high.
The cleric urged Christians to avoid taking loans or overstretching their finances, saying modesty should guide this year’s celebrations. He cautioned families against unnecessary pressure to buy new clothes or large quantities of food, adding that households must “manage whatever is available.”
Reverend Dangora also appealed for heightened vigilance on the roads, advising travellers without sufficient funds to remain where they are for safety. He encouraged both Christians and Muslims to maintain mutual respect and goodwill during the festive period, noting that peaceful coexistence reflects God’s intention for Nigerian communities.
He called on citizens to report suspicious activity promptly and asked security agencies to intensify patrols as the Christmas season approaches, emphasising that harmony and caution must go hand-in-hand this year.
