Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed 64 nominees for career and non-career ambassadorial positions, marking a key step in strengthening the country’s diplomatic representation abroad.
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, after a detailed screening process conducted by lawmakers.
Presenting the report, the committee’s chairman, Senator Sani Bello, outlined the qualifications and readiness of the nominees, prompting the chamber to unanimously endorse the appointments.
However, the session was not without concerns, as Senator Sahabi Yau drew attention to the absence of any nominee from Zamfara State on the list submitted to the Senate.
The lawmaker urged the upper chamber to formally notify President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the omission, stressing the need for fairness and inclusivity in ambassadorial appointments.
Responding to the concern, Senate President Godswill Akpabio acknowledged the observation and clarified that the list presented for confirmation was not exhaustive.
He assured senators that the issue would be communicated to the President, adding that additional ambassadorial nominations are expected and that Zamfara State would be duly considered in subsequent appointments.
