Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on 300 women who completed the Renewed Hope Initiative and Huawei Women in Tech training programme to use their newly acquired digital skills to transform their communities and businesses.
Speaking at the programme’s closing ceremony in Abuja, Mrs Tinubu said the training was designed to empower women entrepreneurs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones with practical technology-driven tools for business growth. The initiative, jointly organised by the Renewed Hope Initiative and Huawei Nigeria, aims to bridge the digital gender gap and promote inclusive participation in the digital economy.
“Technology keeps evolving, and your biggest strength is your ability to keep learning and adapting,” the First Lady told the participants. “Use your new skills to solve real problems in your communities because true innovation is only valuable when it improves lives. Mentor others and support one another—together, you can build a stronger network of women in technology.”
Mrs Tinubu said the programme reflected the goals of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to accelerate economic diversification through industrialisation and digital inclusion. She added that equipping women with digital knowledge would make them powerful agents of national transformation.
Highlighting the programme’s success, she revealed that the initiative trained 300 women between April and October 2024, including university students and small business owners, preparing them to thrive in the evolving digital economy.
Huawei Nigeria’s Managing Director, Chris Lu, commended the collaboration, describing it as more than just a training effort. “We are empowering women to take their rightful place at the forefront of the global digital economy,” he said. “When women rise, nations thrive.”
Similarly, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Abdullahi, praised the programme’s alignment with national goals. “When you empower a woman, you empower a nation,” he said, pledging NITDA’s continued support for such transformative initiatives.
