The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) will begin strict enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and bottles smaller than 200ml starting December 2025, the agency’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, announced on Tuesday in Abuja.

Adeyeye stressed that no further extensions will be granted, urging manufacturers and retailers to comply fully.

“This ban is not punitive; it is protective. It is aimed at safeguarding the health and future of our children and youth,” she said, highlighting the dangers posed by cheap, high-alcohol-content drinks in small, easily concealable packages.

The move targets the widespread misuse and addiction among minors, commercial drivers, and other vulnerable groups. Adeyeye noted that the directive is grounded in scientific research and public health considerations, despite resistance from some industry stakeholders.

The ban follows a Senate resolution expressing concern that inexpensive sachet alcohol makes it easier for minors to access alcoholic beverages, fuelling social problems and health risks.

NAFDAC had previously negotiated a phased implementation with industry players through a Memorandum of Understanding, with initial deadlines pushed back from 2023 to 2025. Adeyeye confirmed that the December deadline is now absolute.

“The Senate’s resolution is clear — there will be no further extension. Retailers and manufacturers must comply,” she warned.

The enforcement of the ban is expected to significantly reduce the availability of low-cost alcoholic drinks and curb alcohol-related harm across Nigeria.
