The Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Owerri, is preparing to mark two significant milestones as it celebrates 40 years since its inauguration and 50 years of Methodism in the Owerri area. The events, scheduled for 27–29 November, will take place at the Methodist Cathedral of Unity in Owerri.

The celebrations, held under the theme “Thus Far the Lord Has Helped Us,” will bring together clergy, lay leaders and worshippers from across the country. The programme includes a diocesan rally, a prayer summit, and a plenary session featuring merit awards and the launch of a historic publication on Methodism in the region.

The commemorations begin on Thursday with a rally involving circuits and sectional groups across the diocese. A prayer summit follows on Friday, with special ministrations and choir renditions expected to draw large participation. The anniversary will conclude on Saturday with a plenary session and the presentation of awards recognising contributions to the growth of the Church, followed by the unveiling of a book documenting the history of Methodism in Owerri.

Planning for the event is being led by Lady Prof. Blessing Ijeoma, Chairman of the Planning Committee, and Sir Dr. Okon Nkerefi, the Diocesan Lay President. Both have described the anniversary as a moment of reflection on the Church’s journey and an opportunity to renew its commitment to service and spiritual growth.

Several senior figures of the Methodist Church Nigeria are expected to attend. Among them are His Eminence, Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, the Prelate of the Church; His Eminence, Dr. S. C. K. Uche JP, Prelate Emeritus; Sir Ide Ifeanyi Okechukwu, Lay President of Conference; Most Rev’d G. A. Agapusi, Archbishop of the Aba Archdiocese; and Rt. Rev’d Dr. Babatunde Taiwo, Secretary of Conference.

Methodism first became established in Owerri in 1975 and has since grown into a prominent religious community involved in education, leadership development and social outreach. The creation of the Owerri Diocese in 1985 further strengthened the Church’s influence within Imo State.

Organisers say the upcoming anniversary will be an opportunity to celebrate the Church’s contribution over the past five decades and to look ahead to its future role in the region.
