Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities of the state-owned Environmental Transformation Commission (ENTRACO) following a tragic accident in Owerri that claimed the life of a commercial motorcyclist. The incident occurred during an ENTRACO enforcement operation near St. Mulumba Catholic Church along Akachi Road on Monday.
The crash reportedly left the motorcyclist’s passenger critically injured, prompting outrage across Owerri and sparking discussions on social media about road safety and enforcement practices. A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Oguike Nwachuku, confirmed the suspension of all ENTRACO activities “until further notice” as the state investigates the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Governor Uzodimma emphasized that the suspension should not be interpreted as a relaxation of environmental or traffic regulations. Residents and road users are still expected to adhere strictly to state laws, with sanctions remaining in place for any violations.
ENTRACO has handed over the personnel suspected to have caused the fatal accident to the police for investigation. Director of Operations Ifeanyi Nwokedi confirmed that the officer involved has been transferred to law enforcement authorities for further inquiry. The agency also clarified that only one person died, while the injured passenger continues to receive medical care.
The commission expressed regret over the tragedy and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. ENTRACO assured full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure transparency and justice in handling the incident. The accident reportedly occurred when an ENTRACO officer attempted to impound a vehicle obstructing traffic, leading to the collision with the motorcyclist.
Reiterating the state’s ban on motorcycle operations within Owerri, ENTRACO urged road users to comply with traffic regulations, avoid illegal one-way driving, and support enforcement efforts to maintain safety and order on the roads.
