The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, is currently presiding over an expanded security committee meeting to address escalating insecurity in Abuja. The session brings together the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, heads of security agencies, area council chairmen, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.
The meeting follows directives by Wike for heightened vigilance across the FCT, as reports of rising criminal activities and security breaches continue to concern residents. Officials are expected to review strategies to strengthen safety and enhance rapid response across the territory.
As part of the security reinforcement, the minister ordered an increase in patrols around the city, with particular attention to border areas and key entry points connecting the FCT to neighbouring states. Surveillance operations have been intensified to prevent infiltration by criminal elements.
Deployment of the Operation Sweep Squad has been central to these efforts. The squad comprises a joint task force including the Nigerian Police, military units, the Department of State Services, and other security agencies, working collaboratively to secure vulnerable areas of Abuja.
Security operatives have been strategically stationed at various locations across the FCT to ensure effective coverage and immediate response to any threats. Wike emphasized the importance of coordination among agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and operational efficiency.
