A dramatic case of deception has stunned Edo State after police arrested a woman who allegedly staged her own kidnapping and received ₦5 million in ransom from her husband.

According to the Edo State Police Command, the suspect, identified as Chioma Success Adaniken, conspired with accomplices to fake her abduction alongside her three-year-old son, Andrea, in a ploy to extort money from her husband, Paul Adaniken.

Police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem said the case began on 27 October when Paul reported to the New Etete Police Division in Benin City that his wife and son had been kidnapped. He said the supposed abductors demanded ₦5 million for their release.

Investigators launched an intensive intelligence-led operation involving cyber analysis, which quickly revealed inconsistencies in the story. The probe led to the arrest of Chioma’s cousin, Osita Godfrey, who was initially thought to be assisting the family. His confession exposed the elaborate plot and led officers to Chioma herself.

Another suspect, identified as 23-year-old Martins Chidozie, was also apprehended. The police recovered the full ₦5 million ransom and confirmed that all suspects had made detailed confessional statements. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further action.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, praised the swift response of the New Etete Division, describing the investigation as “a testament to the Command’s intelligence-driven policing strategy.” He warned the public against criminal activities that disrupt peace and vowed continued deployment of technology to fight crime.

The arrest has sparked widespread conversation across Edo communities, with many expressing disbelief over the lengths to which individuals now go to manipulate loved ones for money.
