A woman has been arrested in Delta State for allegedly subjecting her three-year-old daughter to inappropriate sexual acts, prompting widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger child-protection measures in Nigeria.
Police authorities confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating that the suspect was taken into custody after community members raised concerns about her behaviour with the child. Officers said the allegations involve serious violations that fall under child sexual abuse, a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
The child has since been placed under protective care while investigations continue. Welfare officers and medical professionals are reported to be working closely with security operatives to ensure the girl receives urgent psychological and physical support.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the suspect may have repeatedly abused the child. The case is being handled by the Gender Desk Unit, which specializes in offences involving minors and vulnerable persons.
Authorities say the investigation will be thorough, stressing that child safeguarding remains a top priority. They added that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to deter similar crimes.
Human-rights groups in Delta State have condemned the incident, describing it as another alarming reminder of the rising cases of child abuse nationwide. They are calling for accelerated legal reforms, increased community vigilance, and wider awareness to protect vulnerable children.
Police officials urged the public to report suspected abuse immediately, noting that early intervention is often the key to preventing long-term psychological and physical harm. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation progresses.
