Bayer Leverkusen have received a timely injury boost as Nigerian winger Nathan Tella edges closer to full fitness and is set to make his long-awaited return to action after the upcoming international break, head coach Kasper Hjulmand has confirmed.
Tella, who sustained a knee injury during Leverkusen’s 3–1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on September 21, 2025, has been sidelined for nearly seven weeks. The 25-year-old, who joined from Southampton last season, has been undergoing an intensive recovery program and recently resumed light training sessions at the club’s BayArena facility.
Speaking to the club’s official media on Friday, Hjulmand expressed optimism over the winger’s recovery, revealing that both Tella and fellow teammate Axel Andrich have rejoined on-pitch sessions. “Nathan and Axel are already back on the pitch, training individually. The international break will be very helpful for them to regain rhythm and confidence,” the manager stated.
The Nigerian star’s return comes at a crucial time for Die Werkself, who are battling to maintain their unbeaten run in the 2025/2026 Bundesliga season, currently sitting atop the table with 28 points from 10 matches. Tella’s pace, pressing, and attacking versatility have been key assets for Leverkusen’s high-octane system under Hjulmand.
Before his injury setback, Tella had made four appearances across all competitions, registering an assist and earning praise for his dynamic performances, especially in the UEFA Europa League fixture against Club Brugge. His imminent return is expected to bolster Leverkusen’s squad depth ahead of a congested December schedule that includes crucial Bundesliga and European fixtures.
Sources within the club’s medical department hinted that Tella could feature by late November, with staff closely monitoring his progress. “He’s responding very well to treatment, no setbacks so far,” one insider disclosed, noting that the player has been eager to rejoin full team training.
The Super Eagles winger is also eyeing a comeback strong enough to earn selection for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, which resumes in December. If cleared to play, Tella’s return will not only lift Leverkusen’s title ambitions but also boost Nigeria’s attacking options ahead of crucial qualifiers.
