Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has launched a scathing critique of Pep Guardiola after Manchester City’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Monaco, accusing the Spaniard of creating a “massive problem” for his side.
The Premier League champions dominated possession at the Etihad but failed to secure maximum points, despite goals from Erling Haaland and Jordan Teze. Eric Dier’s strike for Monaco ensured the French visitors left with a share of the spoils.
Sutton’s fury centred on Guardiola’s second-half decision to withdraw Jeremy Doku — who had looked dangerous on the wing — and replace him with Savinho, while leaving Bernardo Silva on the flank.
Speaking on BBC Sport’s Football Daily, Sutton said:
“Why is he playing Silva out wide? For the life of me, I don’t know why Pep took Jeremy Doku off and kept Bernardo Silva on. I’m not saying Silva is a liability, but he doesn’t have the ability to go past a full-back. That is a massive problem.”
The draw leaves Guardiola under scrutiny ahead of City’s return to Premier League action against Brentford on Sunday, with questions growing over his tactical calls in Europe.
