A 22-year-old hairdresser, Odama Mary Agado, has reportedly taken her own life in Enugu after discovering that her boyfriend was cheating on her.

Mary, who hailed from Woleche-Ipuole, Yahe Ward in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, was said to have consumed a poisonous substance believed to be Sniper shortly after catching her boyfriend with another woman in the apartment she had rented for him.

According to a family acquaintance identified as Daniel, Mary had been financially supporting her lover.

“She was doing well in her hairdressing business — she even bought a car for her boyfriend and rented an apartment for him,” he said. “But when she visited him last Friday, she met him with another girl and became furious.”

Devastated by the betrayal, Mary reportedly returned home and called her mother, telling her to “take whatever she heard in good faith,” an apparent farewell message hinting at suicide.

Daniel said the mother did not immediately act on the call because she lacked airtime to return it. Hours later, she received a message that Mary had ingested poison and was rushed to the hospital.

Efforts by doctors to save her life failed. She died later that evening and was buried the next day in her hometown.

“We buried her immediately on Saturday because she was too young to be kept for long,” Daniel added.

No police report was filed, as the community believed she acted on her own. Some residents, however, suspected “spiritual manipulation.”

The tragic case has sparked discussions on mental health awareness, toxic relationships, and the growing number of suicide cases among young Nigerians.
