Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has criticised Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lead counsels to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, for participating in the recent #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.
In a post shared on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), Onanuga expressed disapproval of Ejimakor’s presence at the demonstration organised by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, describing it as a “shambolic protest.”
“I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore. I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest,” Onanuga wrote.
The presidential aide argued that Ejimakor’s participation was unethical and contrary to the legal principle of sub judice, given that Kanu’s treason trial is still before the court.
“As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court,” Onanuga said. “Rather than focusing on preparing a strong defence, Mr. Ejimakor has resorted to extra-legal tactics, joining a career anarchist to influence the process.”
Onanuga urged relevant legal bodies to consider disciplinary measures against Ejimakor, insisting that his conduct was “unbecoming of a legal practitioner.”
Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021, facing charges bordering on treasonable felony.
The #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, which took place on Monday, saw activists and supporters call for his release. The demonstration was dispersed by security forces using teargas and live warning shots.
