President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated two prominent Nigerians — Senator Abu Ibrahim and former First Lady Margaret Shonekan — on their milestone birthdays, describing them as exemplary figures whose lives continue to inspire dedication, loyalty, and compassion.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded Senator Abu Ibrahim, who turned 80, as a “principled statesman, trusted ally, and courageous democrat.”

Tinubu reflected on their friendship that began in the Senate chambers during the aborted Third Republic in 1992, saying, “Abu has been more than a friend. He is my brother. Since we first met in 1992, our friendship has only grown deeper and stronger.”

He praised the Katsina-born politician for his unwavering commitment to democracy, recalling his fearless role during the June 12, 1993 election annulment, when Ibrahim refused to leave detention until all his colleagues were freed.

Highlighting Ibrahim’s political legacy, Tinubu noted that his re-election to the Senate in 2003 and 2011 reflected the people’s trust in his leadership and dedication to public service. He also credited him as a key figure in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013 and a pillar of unity within the party.

“As a patriot, Abu has lived a life of service and integrity. He supported my presidential bid in 2023 and offered invaluable ideas toward the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Tinubu said, while praying for the senator’s continued health and service to Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the President also extended his warm wishes to Chief Margaret Shonekan, widow of the late Chief Ernest Shonekan, former Head of the Interim National Government, who turned 84 on Monday.

Tinubu described her as “an embodiment of grace and compassion,” noting that her life of humility and kindness continues to inspire Nigerian women and the nation at large.

“The President celebrates the wife of the former Head of the Interim National Government, whose exemplary humility and kindness continue to inspire,” the statement read.

Both tributes, reflecting Tinubu’s message of gratitude and respect, underline his acknowledgment of Nigeria’s elder statesmen and women whose personal sacrifices helped shape the country’s political and social evolution.
