Tragedy struck in Jigawa State on Tuesday after a 30-year-old woman, identified as Adams Hannafi, took her own life by hanging in Sumore village, Dutse Local Government Area.
Residents said the mother of four, who was believed to have been battling mental illness, was found hanging from a tree around 3:00 p.m. Her body was discovered by passersby, who immediately alerted security operatives.
Spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement released to journalists on Wednesday.
He said a team of officers from the Yalwawa Division arrived at the scene and found the victim lifeless. “The body was carefully lowered and examined, and no signs of foul play were found,” he said.
According to the police, the body was taken to Dutse General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had been struggling with mental health issues before the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, expressed deep sadness over the case and urged families to pay closer attention to loved ones showing signs of emotional or psychological distress.
He advised the public to seek early medical and psychological help for relatives exhibiting symptoms of depression or instability, noting that proactive care could prevent similar tragedies.
The late Mrs. Hannafi is survived by her husband and four children.
