Imo State has taken a bold leap into the digital era as its Internal Revenue Service (IIRS) officially announced the complete automation of all revenue-generation processes, a move expected to revolutionize tax administration and boost internally generated revenue (IGR) across the state.

The Executive Chairman of the IIRS, Justice Okoye, disclosed this during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday, October 24, 2025, in Owerri, which brought together heads of key revenue agencies including ENTRACO, Imo Signage and Advertisement Agency (IMSAA), Imo Housing Corporation (IHC), and the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA). Also present was the Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu.

Okoye said the automation initiative marks a major milestone in Governor Uzodimma’s digital transformation agenda, emphasizing that all revenue notices are now issued electronically. He noted that the system has already led to improved transparency, faster processing, and higher efficiency in tax collections across the state. “This transition to a fully automated process has redefined how we manage state revenues. It is a sustainable model that ensures accountability, accuracy, and convenience for taxpayers,” Okoye stated.

He added that the IIRS is working closely with other agencies to harmonize data, share real-time analytics, and reduce revenue leakages. The automation, according to him, will also minimize human interference, eliminate manual bottlenecks, and establish a stronger framework for compliance monitoring — a challenge that has historically affected revenue optimization in the state.

Heads of the participating agencies commended the IIRS leadership for what they described as a forward-thinking, tech-driven reform. They also pledged full commitment to aligning their operational structures with the new digital system. However, they called for additional logistics support, particularly improved mobility and upgraded IT infrastructure, to sustain the momentum of the initiative.

Okoye assured that the government is already making deliberate efforts to provide the necessary tools, equipment, and funding for seamless implementation across all revenue-generating bodies. He reiterated that the state’s ultimate goal is to build a unified, transparent, and digitally efficient revenue system that aligns with international standards and boosts public confidence in governance.

Analysts believe Imo’s digital transformation in revenue management could set a benchmark for other states in Nigeria. With the new system, the IIRS aims to increase the state’s IGR beyond the ₦22.8 billion recorded in 2024 — positioning Imo as one of the top-performing states in digital tax administration nationwide.
