It was a moment of joy and culture as Dr. Chika Ihenakwe formally introduced her fiancé, Austin Chidubem Ochi, to her father, Attorney Emmanuel Ihenakwe, in line with Igbo marital tradition, on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The ceremony, held at the Ihenakwe family residence, beautifully blended tradition, love, and celebration. Dr. Chika, a medical doctor raised in the United States, reaffirmed her deep connection to her Igbo roots by observing this important cultural rite.

Austin Ochi, a U.S.-trained Mechanical Engineer working with Apple Inc., was warmly welcomed by the Ihenakwe family and their community.

What began as a modest family introduction quickly evolved into a colourful cultural gathering filled with laughter, prayers, and traditional blessings.

The event commenced with the symbolic presentation of kolanut by Chief Emmanuel Ihenakwe, as dictated by Igbo custom. His Majesty, Eze Akuwueze Raphael Ikegwuruka, Ezeahurukwe II of Mgbirichi and Abakuru land, was present to bless the occasion.

Offering prayers in the Igbo language, the monarch invoked divine favour upon the couple, wishing them peace, fertility, and lasting happiness.

The groom’s uncle, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Ochi, also addressed the gathering, paying tribute to his late brother — the groom’s father, Mr. Austin Ochi, who had instructed before his passing that the marriage preparations should continue. He then presented the traditional drinks, symbolising their family’s intention to honour that wish.

“Daddy, ṅuwanu” — Chika’s beautiful acceptance moment

When the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Solomon Ohiri, called for the bride-to-be, the atmosphere came alive as Dr. Chika made her graceful entrance, drawing cheers and admiration.

Her father then asked the question that sealed the ceremony:
“Chika, do you accept Austin Ochi and his family’s request for a marital union? Shall we proceed to enjoy the drinks and kolanuts they presented?”

With a smile, she responded, “Daddy, ṅuwanu,” — an Igbo affirmation meaning “yes.”

The crowd erupted in applause as the proud father celebrated his daughter’s composure, values, and academic success.

Family pride and future blessings

Chief Ihenakwe took a moment to commend his daughter and her siblings for maintaining Igbo cultural values despite their American upbringing. The day’s highlight came when Enyioha, a family elder, congratulated Isiguzo Ihenakwe on passing the Nigerian Law School and offered heartfelt prayers for the young couple.

The ceremony ended with songs, dances, and blessings — a reflection of unity, love, and cultural pride.
