Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The arrest was confirmed by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who described the action as “preposterous” and an assault on Nigeria’s judicial system.
“The arrest of Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments ago is preposterous,” Effiong wrote on X. “The police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system. He should be freed immediately. Stop the shenanigans.”
Sowore, a long-time pro-democracy advocate, had earlier posted on Facebook that he was at the court with Kanu Agabi (SAN), lead counsel for detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who informed him that his team would be withdrawing from the case.
The police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the reason for Sowore’s arrest or his current whereabouts.
Sowore, who has been a vocal critic of successive Nigerian governments, has previously faced multiple arrests linked to his activism and public demonstrations calling for accountability and reform.
