Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, has confirmed that a midnight inferno gutted part of its Directorate of Students’ Affairs building, destroying valuables worth millions of naira, including all academic and graduation gowns.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, 2 September 2025, at the institution’s main campus. According to a statement signed by Dr. Wale Balogun, Deputy Registrar of the Corporate Affairs Division, the blaze was confined to the Students’ Affairs section of the building.

Although no injuries or casualties were reported, the incident caused extensive damage. “Even though, regrettably, the entire graduation gowns were completely razed by the inferno, there were no injuries or casualties reported,” the statement read.

The loss of graduation gowns — essential for convocation ceremonies — is considered one of the most significant setbacks for the university, with replacement costs expected to run into millions.

To determine the cause of the incident, the university management has set up an investigative panel chaired by a senior professor. Members of the university community have been urged to share observations or recommendations regarding the fire through a designated WhatsApp line (08056066643) or via email at kukoyi.oluyemisi@oouagoiwoye.edu.ng.

The management has also assured staff and students that measures will be taken to strengthen fire safety on campus and prevent a recurrence.

The blaze has left many students, particularly finalists, anxious over preparations for their forthcoming convocation ceremonies, though the university has yet to announce alternative arrangements.
