The Imo State House of Assembly has approved a motion to rename the historic Douglas Road in Owerri after the state governor, Hope Uzodimma.
The decision, reached during plenary on Tuesday, immediately sparked reactions across the state capital, where Douglas Road has long been regarded as one of the most iconic and busiest streets.
Lawmakers who backed the motion said the renaming was in recognition of Governor Uzodimma’s “transformational leadership” and his contributions to infrastructure development in Imo State. They argued that immortalizing the governor while still in office was a fitting way to acknowledge his service.
Douglas Road, which cuts through central Owerri, has deep historical roots. It was originally named after a colonial-era administrator and has for decades been a hub of commerce, transport, and social life. The change, supporters say, represents a symbolic shift toward celebrating indigenous leadership.
Critics, however, warn that the move could stir controversy, given the road’s cultural and historical significance. Some residents argue that renaming Douglas Road erases a piece of the city’s identity and risks alienating those who see the street as part of their heritage.
The development adds to the growing list of debates surrounding Governor Uzodimma’s administration, which has drawn both praise for ambitious projects and criticism over political decisions. The renaming motion, observers say, will likely deepen conversations about the balance between honoring leaders and preserving history.
With the Assembly’s approval, the process of officially gazetting the new name—Hope Uzodimma Road—is expected to commence in the coming days, marking yet another landmark change in the heart of Owerri.
