Global football’s governing body, FIFA, has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) and Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

In an official letter dated 15 September, FIFA confirmed that the matter has been referred to its Disciplinary Committee. Both SAFA and Mokoena have been given six days to submit formal responses to the charges.

The disciplinary process could carry sanctions ranging from fines to player suspensions or association-level penalties, depending on the findings of the committee.

Neither SAFA nor Mokoena has issued a public statement addressing FIFA’s action, but insiders suggest that the association is preparing its defence.

The case will be closely watched across the continent, given Mokoena’s key role in South Africa’s midfield and SAFA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its reputation in global football governance.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee is expected to make its ruling after receiving the responses within the stipulated timeframe.
